From February 11 to March 5, the 5th Primary School “Ivan Vazov” in Sofia, a teaching site of the Confucius Institute in Sofia, held a month-long Chinese New Year themed activity program. An international Chinese language teacher and 14 students from the school participated in the event.
The four-week cultural experience program featured a variety of activities related to the Spring Festival, including red envelopes, paper-cutting, the Chinese zodiac, and Lantern Festival traditions. During the program, students made their own red envelopes, cut out the character “spring” (春) in paper-cutting activities, took part in interactive zodiac games, and created DIY Lantern Festival lanterns. They also watched a robot martial arts performance from the China Media Group Spring Festival Gala, learning about Chinese New Year customs and experiencing the festive atmosphere of the Chinese New Year through hands-on participation.
By organically integrating traditional festival culture with Chinese language classroom teaching, the program allowed students to witness the combination of traditional cultural charm and modern technology. Through practical activities, students not only increased their interest in learning Chinese but also gained a deeper understanding of the cultural significance of Chinese festivals.
